This wedding portrait of Princess Alice in a silk satin dress designed by Norman Hartnell exemplifies Madame Yevonde’s theatrical style and use of props to stage scenes. The photograph was taken in her studio and the flowers, including the bride’s bouquet, had been arranged by innovative florist Constance Spry.

Yevonde Philone Middleton was a trailblazer in portrait photography through her use of bold colour work and experimentation with the Vivex colour process and solarisation. She championed women photographers, paving the way for women to enter the profession.
