Photograph of Archibald, John and Ewan Macdonald. All three boys are shown full-length wearing Highland dress. Their father John Macdonald was originally employed as a Jäger (huntsman or gamekeeper) to Prince Albert on the Balmoral estate in Scotland. He often attended the Queen and the Prince on their Highland excursions. By 1848 he was in charge of the kennels at Windsor Castle. Queen Victoria took a keen interest in his family.
