One panel from an original series of eight Brussels tapestries depicting the life of Alexander the Great, illustrating Alexander at the battle of Issus (333 BC), in the midst of a dramatic scene with horses and soldiers, as he is wounded by Persian foot soldier. Border of swags of fruit and flowers. Woven in Brussels in the workshop of Jan Leyniers from designs by Jacob Jordaens. One of a set of two panels from this series in the Royal Collection.
Five other pieces from the same series are at the Chigi Palace, Rome, also woven by Leyniers. Four at Toledo Cathedral are by a different weaver. For this panel two drawings and an oil sketch of the original design by Jordaens are known.Provenance
Recorded at Palace of Holyroodhouse before 1700, hanging in the Marquess of Breadalbane's apartments. Purchased from the Marquess of Breadalbane when he relinquished his apartment at the palace in June 1860.
