Upright longcase clock panelled on all four sides in glass and crowned by a group of two winged putti, one playing with a cock, the second holding parchment and dividers. Hanging from below the cornice at either end are a pair of oak garlands chased with acorns which, at each fore-corner, are suspended from a ram's head. Two female allegorical figures - Art holding a parchment, Literature an open book - stand on either side of the clock case on a break fronted rectangular base. The, later, rectangular pedestal is veneered with ebony and is fitted with gilt bronze mounts including four chased relief panels representing Juno in her chariot, Vulcan in his forge, Artemis with the Temple of Ephesus on her head and Neptune with his horses. The case is signed by the manufacturer 'de la Croix' who may be Pierre Delacroix. When he was declared bankrupt in 1777 this clock may have been listed in his workshop as 'une très grande Pendule de valleur de plus 4,000 livres'. The present dial and movement are replacements by Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy. the engraved silvered dial has the 12 hours represented by Roman numerals and pierced blued steel hands. The eight day timepiece has a fusee movement and a dead beat escapement. Vulliamy number 1910
Provenance
There are no details as to the acquisition of the clock but legend suggests that it was acquired in a wager by George IV from Charles X of France; it appears in the 1837 Clock Inventory of Windsor Castle.
Included in the Pictorial Inventory of 1827-33 – RCIN 934897. The inventory was originally created as a record of the clocks, vases, candelabra and other miscellaneous items from Carlton House, as well as selected items from the stores at Buckingham House, the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, Hampton Court and Kensington Palace for consideration in the refurbishment of Windsor Castle.
