Fifty Views of Bermuda, 1869: Arrival of dock at Bermuda 1869
-
Photograph of a print, showing men and women looking out to sea towards ships in the distance.
Rear Admiral James Francis Ballard Wainwright (1820-72) was charged with preparing Bermuda for the arrival of a floating dock from England to Bermuda in 1869. The dock was to be used to repair and maintain British Naval ships owing to the fact that a dry dock could not be built on the local limestone. The dock which was named HM Floating Dock Bermuda, was built at Campbell, Johnstone & Co Shipyard, North Woolwich and was towed from Madeira to Bermuda by HMS Warrior and HMS Black Prince.
One of fifty photographs of views of Bermuda taken by the photographer Arthur Green (1832-73) that were presented to Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha when Duke of Edinburgh in 1869.Provenance
