Photograph of the scene following a tiger hunt with a dead tiger being carried on the back of an elephant. The tiger is being secured by two men as a driver looks on. A row of elephants with passengers in the grassland in the background.
This photograph is from an album of photographs that were taken during Prince Albert Victor's visit to India in 1890. The Prince was the eldest son of Prince Edward and Princess Alexandra of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The Prince arrived in Bombay (now Mumbai) on 9 October 1889, to embark on a seven-month tour of southern India. The itinerary included visits to Hyderabad (where he was hosted by the Nizam of Hyderabad), Madras (now Chennai), Mysore (Mysuru), Lucknow, Bangalore (now Bengaluru), Agra and Travancore (also known as Thiruvithamkoor). During the trip, the Prince reviewed hundreds of troops, laid foundation stones and both gave and received addresses. By mid-March 1890, the Prince boarded SS Assam and left India for a five-day stay in Egypt before heading to Greece and finally London.
Tiger hunting has been a popular activity for both the south Asian and British royal families for centuries and was once regarded as an act of valour and bravery. The numbers of tigers hunted rose considerably during the years of the British Raj from 1858 to 1947. Today, the tiger is a conservation reliant species and under the Wildlife protection Act of 1972, the hunting of tigers is now officially banned. -
