Group photograph, all standing in a line, by a building with a balcony. Eight officers stand to left of General Sir Samuel Browne (1824-1901) (with white beard and sleeve pinned to his jacket), three to the right, including Major Cavagnari (1841-79) (second from right). All are in a variety of uniform. Another officer wearing a pith helmet sits on the edge of the balcony looking down, with a local boy to left. This photograph was taken in Jalalabad, Afghanistan during the Second Afghan War.
