Pair of chandeliers 1815-45
Gilt bronze, glass | RCIN 2702
-
Pair of chandeliers of different size. The first with 60 lights, the second with 48, each with a cut-glass bowl and three circular bands which rise in tiers, surmounted by four gilt bronze male figures. The upper section with row of protruding swagged shafts terminating in sceptres and crowns. The whole surmounted by corona with palmette. These chandeliers have been extensively altered during their lifetime. They are in two distinct styles and are different sizes, so it is probable that one chandelier was made up from the other. It is likely that the chandeliers were moved to this their current location in the Music Room, Buckingham Palace, from Carlton House, and that they were altered and extended to suit their new position. The sceptres were certainly added later, and are in a similar style to those from a chandelier design by Hancock, Rixon & Dunt from 1810 and to the chandelier in the Piccadilly Drawing Room at Apsley House, London.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV for Carlton House; subsbequently altered.
