Photograph taken inside the Kaiserbagh, Lucknow, in northern India, looking towards the Tomb of Saadat Ali Khan. The Prince of Wales visited India in 1875-6, reaching Lucknow at the beginning of 1876. The city had been the scene of some of the bloodiest fighting and bitterest reprisals on both sides during the Uprising of 1857. In subsequent years, the city became an important stop for British travellers on a tour of India. The Kaiserbagh, only partially seen here in a photograph made in 1865, was the palace of the last King of Lucknow, constructed between 1848-52. Large sections were destroyed both during and after the fighting. Samuel Bourne's photographs of India, taken between 1863-70, were printed in their thousands well into the twentieth century. The photographic firm he established, Bourne & Shepherd, still survives in India today, although in a much reduced form.
