At the time of the Prince’s visit, Greece was ruled by King Otto I, the second son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. He was elected as the first King of modern Greece in 1832, but his rule was beset with problems. On 23 October 1862, the King was deposed, only a few months after the Prince’s visit. He lived in exile in Bavaria until his death in 1867. The photograph is signed and captioned, and dated, in the negative, 'F Bedford Athens', 31 May 1862. See RCIN 2861697 for another print of this image.
