The royal party travelled along the Nile as far as Aswan without stopping at any of the major sites. They then turned around, and began a much slower progression up the Nile. Philae was the first temple complex visited by the Prince, who described the ruins as ‘beautiful and most interesting’. The temple complex was situated on an island which the royal party reached on horseback. The photograph is signed, captioned and dated in the negative, 'F Bedford Philae'. The number in the Day & Son series is 17.
