-
Photograph of the Maritime Canal in St Petersburg. The canal is filled with large boats and there is a rowing boat in the foreground. On the bank to the left there is an obelisk and the buildings of the city can be seen in the distance. The Maritime Canal was opened by Alexander III, Emperor of Russia in May 1885. It greatly improved Russian trade links to the rest of Europe.
