Photograph of the Alexander Column and the General Staff Building in St Petersburg. The column stands in the centre of the square and is topped by a statue of an angel holding a cross. Behind the column is the long bow-shaped facade of the General Staff Building with a triumphal arch to the right. The Alexander Column was built in the 1830s to commemorate the Russian victory in the Patriotic War of 1812.
