-
Photograph of the Bronze Horseman and St Isaac's Cathedral in St Petersburg. To the right is the large sculpture known as the Bronze Horseman, showing Peter the Great mounted on a horse with its front legs raised. It is mounted on a large stone and is surrounded by a railing. A crowd of people are standing in front of the statue including a man with a dog on a lead. St Isaac's Cathedral can be seen behind to the left. It has a dome surrounded by columns and two small bell towers. The pediment is obscured by scaffolding. The Bronze Horseman was commissioned by Catherine the Great and unveiled in 1782. The statue came to be known as the Bronze Horseman due to the popularity of the poem it inspired by Alexander Pushkin.
