Photograph of Kazan Cathedral in St Petersburg. The cathedral has a dome, a central pediment and a long curved colonnade. In front of the cathedral there is a cobbled courtyard with a low fence and a number of lamp posts. Kazan Cathedral was modelled on St Peter's Basilica in Rome and was completed in 1811. In the mid nineteenth century the cathedral was primarily used as a memorial to the Russian victory against Napoleon, and the first political demonstration in Russia took place in front of the cathedral in 1876.
