Charles Clifford (1819-62)
Saints Landro and Buenventura c. 1854
-
Photograph of a painting of the saints Leandro and Buenventura by the painter Murillo. Two saints converse; one in the background holds a miniature version of a monastery, or possibly the Franciscan Monastery in Seville, whilst the figure in the foreground stands holding a Crosier in his left hand a sheet of paper in his left on which is written Latin script.
This painting may belong to a series of eleven paintings by the Spanish painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-82) on the lives of Saints that were displayed in the Franciscan Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas in Seville. These paintings helped secure Murillo's reputation as the foremost Baroque painter in Seville and Spain as a whole.Provenance
