Charles Clifford (1819-62)
View of Seville c.1859
-
Photograph of the city of Seville, Spain. There is a fishing marina and boats in the foreground. The boats' masts partially obscure the view. On the right stands the Torre del Oro or the Tower of Gold which was built during the 1220s. In the background is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See.
Seville Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the world. Construction began in 1402, and the cathedral was completed 104 years later. The dome of the cathedral roof collapsed on two occasions in 1511 and 1888. The latter instance was caused by an earthquake.Provenance
