A sword with darkened steel blade, pitted, etched on each side with Charles I holding sceptre in his raised right hand riding a rearing horse, foliage scrolls. Brass coiled hilt bound with entwined brass wire, flatterned brass ribbon.
Provenance
Traditionally believed to have belonged to Prince Charles Edward Stuart. The blade is inscribed 'With this/good sword/thy cause[?]will maintain/ and fortify/[erased]with Breath/each vein' and 'Vivat/[erased]Vertius[?]/Magnae/Britanniae/Rex.'
In the Royal Collection before 1916. -
