Provenance
Originally in the Engraving Room at Woodhall Park, Hertfordshire, designed by architect Thomas Leverton for Sir Thomas Rumbold (1736-91), built between 1777-82 with furnishings supplied by Mayhew & Ince. Sold at Sotheby's London, by the executors of Colonel Abel Henry Smith on 13 March 1931 (109). Acquired by Queen Mary in April 1931 for £200 from J.M. Botibol, 24 Hanway Street, off Oxford Street, who in his advertisements described himself as 'Dealer in fine old French and English Furntiure'. It was painted white at the time but was subsequently gilded on Queen Mary's instructions.
