The Star Pyramid was built by William Drummond in 1863 and is a monument to honour all those who had died as civil or religious martyrs in Scotland. The crag on which Stirling Castle was built forms part of the Stirling Sill which is formed from quartz-dolerite. Following completion of the construction of the castle during the early 12th century, the outcrop became known as Castle Hill. Generations of members of Scottish Royalty have occupied the Castle until the close of the 16th century when the castle became a military garrison.
