St Martin's Cross - Iona 1883 after an c. 1861
-
Photograph of an ornamental stone carved cross. A man wearing a bowler hat, possibly a clergyman, is seated at the base of the cross and two men stand at the gate.
St Martin's Cross dates from the 9th century and is situated outside Iona Abbey on the Isle of Iona in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Another version of this photograph by Wilson, features a different man wearing a Tam o' Shanter hat who is seated on the base of the cross. During the trip to Iona, Wilson was accompanied by his friend and bookseller, George Walker who records that the pair spent three days on the island. They stayed in a cottage owned by Sandy Macdonald, a boatman, who rowed the group to the mainland following the visit. The man featured in the photograph could be George Walker.Provenance
