Pair of Chairs of Estate 1937
Wood, satin, silk braid, feather-filled cushion pad | RCIN 2606
-
Pair of chairs of estate with serpentine arms raised on convex supports, the whole entirely covered in red satin, with gold braid and fringing. Supported on four square legs joined by stretchers. Applied in centre of back with embroidered coat of arms of George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
The collection of Coronation chairs in the Throne Room spans just over a hundred years. This is because up until George V and Queen Mary’s Coronation in 1910 it had been customary to sell the chairs and other furnishings made specifically for the occasion to those who attended the event.Provenance
Made for the Coronation of King George VI at Westminster Abbey, 12 May 1937. Used during the first part of the Coronation Service, placed at ninety degrees to the dais and Edward the Confessor's throne, during which the King swore the Coronation Oath before moving to Edward the Confessor's throne for the anointing and crowning. Queen Elizabeth remained seated in her own Chair of Estate beside the King throughout this time; this is the view in the Coronation group portrait RCIN 405255 which clearly shows the Queen seated in her Chair.
The design of these chairs was reported at the time to be a 'modified seventeenth century design'. -
