A Temple at Hurpunhullee 1866
-
Photograph of a temple at Hurpunhullee. Its style of architecture is unusual for southern India, but a similar style can also be found in the buildings of Cannanore, Calcutta and along the Malabar coast below the Ghats. The pillars of the temple and its sloping stone roof is a novelty in Indian architecture. The most unusual aspect of the temple is the Tibetan character of the wooden roof, which forms a second storey and protects the lower roof from the weather. The bells that hang from each angle of the roof are characteristic of temples in Tibet and the Himalayas.
