General View of the Temple of Vithoba at Beejanuggur 1866
-
Photograph of a general view of the Temple of Vithoba at Beejanuggur (Vijayanagara). Each of the great piers supporting the roof were composed of a single block. The photograph represents the east side of the temple, showing the principal pillars of the porch. Many of the pillars were cut into the forms of dragons or lions, with female figures on their backs, interspersed with foliage and smaller figures. The heavy eaves are huge blocks of granite, fluted inside and surmounted by a string course of stone which is carved with a pattern of paired wolves' heads.
The temple was one of the finest examples of the Dravidian style and it was built between 1530 and 1542. It was constructed from granite, in a monolithic style. -
