A Jain Temple near Hullabeed 1857
-
Photograph of a Jain temple near Hullabeed. The temple is unfinished, as is evident from the state of the Vimana. The building is an unusual example of a multi-angular style. The façade is plain with little decoration or carving, except for pilasters marking its angles. If finished, the temple would have been surmounted by a sikra (spire) which would have complemented the austerity of the architectural base as it now stands. The Jain temples at Hullabeed are small with unadorned exteriors featuring pilastered walls and basement mouldings. Inside they have lathe-turned columns.
Hullabeed (ancient Dwarasamudra), a small town in the Hassan district, was once the capital of the Hoysala dynasty of the southern Deccan which flourished from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. -
