The Mukteshwara Temple at Chaudanpur 1866

Photograph of the Mukteshwara Temple at Chaudanpur (or Chaudadampur) in Karnataka. The outer walls of the shrine have niches in which images were placed, and sculptured panels. The temple has two porches enclosed by a low wall, richly decorated with bands of scroll work and repetitions of little temple-towers or shikaras.
The text describes the temple as 'fine' and 'bold' with a high level of detail in its structure and ornamental carvings. In front of the Vimana (sanctuary) is a sculpture of a bull which, along with the emblems inscribed in the stone slab of the porch, symbolise the dedication to Siva. The temple is judged imperfect given the flawed form of its dome and the insignificance of its kullus (finial) which is described as 'much too small'. This is in contrast to the 'perfect proportions' found in the temple at Dumbul (RCIN 2603928). -
