The Double Temple at Hurulhullee 1866
-
Photograph of the double temple at Hurulhullee. This architectural model, characterised by a central porch leading to two sanctuaries, was common in India. This style of temple contained a dark cella or sanctuary which housed a Lingum, the emblem of Siva. The great temple at Hullabeed is constructed on this model, but on a far grander scale.
Hurulhullee was a town located thirteen miles east of Hullabeed. The temple belonged to the period of the Bellala dynasty, which erected the great temples at Belloor and Hullabeed. It was later in date and inferior in quality of ornamentation to the great temples of the capital, although it was dedicated to the same god, Siva. -
