The Temple of Someswar at Hurulhullee 1866
-
Photograph of the temple of Someswar at Hurulhullee, built in the pure Chalukya style of architecture. A large proportion of its ornamentation remained incomplete and its beauty was further spoiled by repeated coats of whitewash. In front of the temple's principal Vimana (sanctuary) was a sculpted Shardala (tiger) which was the emblem of the Bellala dynasty.
Hurulhullee was a town located thirteen miles east of Hullabeed. The temple belonged to the period of the Bellala dynasty, which erected the great temples at Belloor and Hullabeed. It was later in date and inferior in quality of ornamentation to the great temples of the capital, although it was dedicated to the same god, Siva. -
