-
Photograph of sculptures on the west front of the Great Temple at Hullabeed.
The sculptures contain two groups. On the right is the figure of the deity Atri, a legendary bard and scholar who was one of nine Prajapatis. Atri was a son of Brahma, said to be ancestor of some Brahmin, Prajapatis, Kshatriya and Vaishya communities and is one of the Saptarishi, the seven great sages. On the left there is a figure that represents a manifestation of Siva (Shiva). The figure is standing beneath the canopy of a tree and is surrounded by followers and female figures. He is wearing an elaborate headdress and traditional Hindu costume. He is celebrating the defeat of Maha Asura. -
