Queen Mary visited the Princess Alice Home for Totally Disabled Sailors and Soldiers, on Nixey Close, Slough, on 5 May 1919. The gothic-style house was formerly called Springfield House by William Nixey, a black lead manufacturer. It was a home for disabled ex-servicemen until 1938 and then a maternity home between 1939 and 1945 and thereafter an old people's home until the late 1970s -
