Photograph of the Shishin-den hall at Imperial Palace as viewed across its courtyard. Although after the Meiji Restoration in 1868 the Emperor's official residency was moved to Tokyo, the Kyoto palace continued to be used for key events, including the enthronement ceremonies of Emperor Taishō (1879-1926) and Emperor Shōwa (1901-1989) in 1912 and 1926 respectively.
