Photograph of close up of brass tablet, standing on moss base; rocky expanse with patches of ice and snow behind. Inscription reads: In memory of Niels Christian Petersen, Danish interpreter aged 38 who died in the faithful discharge of his duty on board HMS "Alert", 14 May 1876 and lies buried beneath this stone. Also of George Porter, gunner, RMA aged 27 of HM Sledge Victoria ... laid down his life in the service of his country, 8 June 1876 and was buried in latitude 82° 47’ N. "Thou shalt wash me and I shall be whiter than snow". [Numerous cracks over upper part of negative]
