Photograph of the "Endurance" trapped in the ice following the winter. After the darkness of an Antarctic winter, the return of the sun was a major event, and a huge boost to morale. The finger of light which rose above the horizon in August promised sunlight and warmth in the months ahead. It would have provided encouragement to Shackleton and his men who had been stuck in the ice since February 1915.
