Photograph of the bow of Endurance with three of the crew on deck, as it travels through ice floes. After acquiring more crew at Buenos Aires, including a new cook and a stowaway, Perce Blackborrow, on 26 October Endurance left for the whaling station at Grytviken, South Georgia, their last harbour before the ice. The ice report from the whaling stations was bad and the ship met ice less than three days out of South Georgia, on 5 December 1914, much sooner than they had expected. Thus began their battle with the pack, as they gradually worked their way south
