This photograph records the achievement of reaching the South Pole. Scott stands with his men (from left to right: Lawrence Oates (1880-1912), Henry Bowers (1883-1912), Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912), Edward Wilson (1872-1912) and Edgar Evans (1876-1912) in front of the Union Jack given to him by Queen Alexandra. The men are all suffering from frostbite and malnutrition, and the physical exhaustion is apparent on their faces.
