Photograph of a single Adélie penguin. Penguins have always fascinated Antarctic explorers because of their unusual appearance and comical expressions. Ponting took well over 100 photographs of the Adélie and Emperor penguins he encountered. The 'Stony Stare' became popular as a postcard image.
