Photographic portrait of the American photographer, Harry Callahan.
The American photographer, Harry Morey Callahan, was born on October 22 1912 in Detroit, Michigan. A former employee of Chrysler Motors, Callahan's interest and eventual career in photography started when he joined the camera club where he worked. He was self taught and used a variety of techniques including multiple exposures in his photography. In 1961 he began teaching photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and retired in 1977. Callahan's work is kept in various institutions including the George Eastman Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 1996 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
The American photographer Nancy Lee Katz produced, over a 25-year period, an impressive series of portraits she named 'Pantheon'. This photograph is one from such series, which comprises dozens of portraits of writers, artists, musicians and other public figures, mostly within the art world, whose work Katz personally admired. The project remained a private undertaking for the photographer and the works had never been published or exhibited during her lifetime.Provenance
