Photographic portrait of Ilse Bing.
Ilse Bing was a German Jewish photographer who was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1899. Bing practiced photo journalism, working in monochrome and developing her won work, but later turned to producing drawings and collages during the 1950s. In 1993 she was awarded the First Gold Medal Award for Photography from the National Arts Club, New York.
The American photographer Nancy Lee Katz produced, over a 25-year period, an impressive series of portraits she named 'Pantheon'. This photograph is one from such series, which comprises dozens of portraits of writers, artists, musicians and other public figures, mostly within the art world, whose work Katz personally admired. The project remained a private undertaking for the photographer and the works had never been published or exhibited during her lifetime.Provenance
