Stereoscopic photograph of the Sir Walter Scott monument in Edinburgh. A neo gothic arcade ascends to conclude in a single point with the figure of Scott positioned beneath. On the left of the background is the Scottish National Gallery building with a classical façade and pediment. Edinburgh Castle can be seen in the far distance. In the foreground is a streetlamp in the form of a candelabra with a man standing at its base. Horse and carriages move, blurred, along St Andrew's Street in the foreground.
The eponymous monument was dedicated to the writer Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) and was constructed in East Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh. The monument stands in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, near the Waverley Railway station, which was named after one of Scott's novels. It was designed by George Meikle Kemp (1795-1844) and construction began in 1840 with its completion in 1844.Provenance
