Photograph of Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret (1930-2002) on board HMS Vanguard when they were travelling with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to South Africa. On Princess Elizabeth's lap is the ship's cat. A member of the crew who wears a hat stands on the left. Part of a series of photographs of the Royal family that were taken on board HMS Vanguard during the Royal visit to South Africa in 1947. Also included are general views of the ship in dock in both Portsmouth and South Africa.

Bequeathed to the Royal Collection in June 2013 by Christine Allaway, widow of Edgar Allaway who was on board HMS Vanguard during the Royal Tour to South Africa in 1947
