A half-length photographic portrait of King George VI, standing, in Air Marshal's uniform and hat with RAF insignia and decorations, turned slightly to his right. Proof.
In October 1948 The King commissioned an up-to-date photograph of himself in the dress of Field Marshal and RAF Air Marshal, to replace earlier photographs taken by Peter North, Hugh Cecil and others. As Dorothy Wilding was in New York during most of the 1940s, either Maryon Parham or Elizabeth Ivimey, at the studio of Dorothy Wilding Portraits, took the photographs. On Monday 25 October the King posed in Field Marshal uniform and on Wednesday 27 October he wore his Air Marshal uniform. Copies were sent to military, naval and RAF bases and messes around Britain and the colonies.Provenance
