Photographic portrait of Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002), King George VI (1895-1952) in naval uniform and Princess Margaret (1930-2002), seated together, looking to their right; plain background. The Queen wears a sequined dress with a three-stringed pearl necklace and a flower brooch. Princess Margaret wears a smart dress-suit decorated with a row of pearl buttons. Not signed.
A royal tour of Australia and New Zealand was planned for 1949 by the King, Queen and Princess Margaret. In April the previous year, the Australia Governor-General, William McKell (1891-1985), requested permission to create commemorative stamps to celebrate the forthcoming tour. The Palace organised photography by Dorothy Wilding Studio, which took place on 21 June 1948. In the event, the tour was cancelled as the King was ill. This photograph was intended to be reproduced as a Tuck photogravure postcard.Provenance
