Family group photograph of King George VI (1895-1952), Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002), HM Queen Elizabeth II when Princess (b. 1926) and Princess Margaret (1930-2002). The Queen sits in a chair, holding open an album, turned towards the King, supported by Princess Elizabeth to her left, the King stands behind the chair and Princess Margaret perches on the arm-rest, a corgi dog lies on the floor (possibly Susan, Princess Elizabeth's dog). Facsimile of studio signature in lower right corner. Photographed in the Bow Room, Buckingham Palace, on 24 June 1946.
In 1946 the Dorothy Wilding Studio was commissioned to take photographs of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, for stamps and publicity for the forthcoming tour of South Africa in 1947. In this particular sequence of photographs they were grouped in different poses, sometimes around a piano, in an informal, domestic and intimate setting so this became more than simply a family portrait but a 'conversation piece', made famous by the German artist Johann Zoffany with his portraits of George III, Queen Charlotte and their many children. It could be compared to an earlier photograph by Marcus Adams, taken in 1938 (RCIN 2943768), or Cecil Beaton's photographs of the family in 1943 (RCIN 2943858).
As Dorothy Wilding herself was working in America for most of the 1940s this portrait may have been taken by Maryon Parham, assisted by Pamela Leger, Wilding's step-daughter.
