In May 1946 Field Marshal Jan Smuts (1870-1950), Prime Minister of South Africa, requested permission to produce a special issue of stamps to commemorate the visit of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret in 1947. As Dorothy Wilding herself was working in America for most of the 1940s this portrait may have been taken by Maryon Parham (1904-83), assisted by Pamela Leger, Wilding's step-daughter. The sitting took place on 24 May 1946.
