Photograph of Princess Charlotte's monument in the Urswick Chapel of St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. In the centre, a marble sculpture of Princess Charlotte ascends to heaven supported by two winged angels whilst at her feet, a group of mourners kneel.
On 6 November 1817, Princess Charlotte, daughter of the Prince Regent and heir presumptive to the throne, died at Claremont House after a labour lasting fifty-one hours in which she had given birth to a stillborn son. The funeral of Princess Charlotte took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, thirteen days after her death. The monument built in the memory of Princess Charlotte was constructed by M.C. Wyatt. The money required to cover its cost was raised through private subscription as early as 1817, the same year as the Princess’ death. A list of subscribers who donated money was published in The Times newspaper in 1818. -
