Photograph of the Norman Tower at Windsor Castle. This forms the eastern exit from the Middle Ward of the castle. Despite its name, the gatehouse dates from the fourteenth century. It is heavily vaulted and decorated with carvings, including surviving medieval lion masks, traditional symbols of majesty, to form an impressive entrance to the Upper Ward.
This narrow archway flanked by the two large drum towers was a state prison until the seventeenth century. Wyatville redesigned the exterior of the gatehouse and the interior was later heavily converted in the nineteenth century. The Lieutenant-Governor of the castle now resides in the gatehouse. -
