Photograph of the clock presented by King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn. The wall hung clock is made from gilt-bronze. Its striking movement has a single steel hand and it is housed in a square tabernacle case, the top of which contains the bell and is pierced with foliage and scrolls. It is surmounted by a leopard holding a shield with the Royal coat of arms and Garter. The clock case is chased and its side panels are engraved with a further coats of arms. The clock is mounted on a gilt metal bracket with a glass dome.
The clock was reputedly given by King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn on the morning of their marriage in 1532. Subsequently it is believed to have been given to Horace Walpole by Lady Germain and it was kept in the Library at Strawberry Hill between 1747 and 1795. It was bought by Queen Victoria at the sale of Horace Walpole's collection at Strawberry Hill on 13 May 1842 as Lot 48 for £110,5s. -
