Sir Benjamin Stone (1838-1914)
Windsor Castle from the Brocas Meadows 1899
-
Photograph of Windsor Castle from the Brocas Meadows. In the foreground there are a line of moored river boats and a group of people, mainly children, seen from behind. At the helm of the boat nearest to the viewer there is a young boy with a fishing rod held aloft in his right hand. He is crouching down and holding the side of the boat with his left hand. In the left foreground there is a group of children, facing away from the viewer. In the centre foreground is a man wearing a waistcoat, white shirt, trousers and a straw boater. He is holding an oar in his hands, perhaps waiting for the boy with the fishing rod to come ashore.
The Brocas is located across the river Thames from the castle, on the riverbank at Eton. Its south-facing aspect makes it a popular spot for picnics and tourism. The name comes from the Brocas family who were local nobility in the thirteenth century, notably Sir Bernard Brocas, Master of the Horse to King Edward III, and good friend of the Black Prince. Sir Bernard Brocas died in 1395 and was buried in St. Edmund’s Chapel in Westminster Abbey. -
