-
Photograph of a full length double portrait of Victoria, Empress of Germany (1840-1901), when Princess Royal, and Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78). Both Princesses face three quarters left and wear hats. Princess Alice's hat has a veil. The sisters are seated together on an ornamental bench in front of a building, likely the gardener's cottage on the Balmoral estate. The artist Edwin Landseer stayed here in 1850 and it may have been where Fenton himself stayed in 1856.
This enlargened photograph was overpainted by James Roberts and was apparently displayed in Prince Arthur's sitting room in Windsor Castle, circa 1870, according to the Inventory of the period. Afterwards it was taken to Osborne House, possibly in one of Prince Albert's rooms, until the 20th century.Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; recorded in Room no 307 at Windsor Castle in 1878
