Photograph of a procession on the streets of Mecca. In the foreground, an Egyptian military band plays in the street. Two lines of soldiers stand on either side of the street, facing right. They hold rifles over their shoulders. Behind the soldiers stand crowds of people watching the procession. In the background, on the far left, is a mahmal. Carried on the back of a camel, the mahmal was a ceremonial covered structure used to transport people. The mahmal was central to the pilgrimage from Cairo to Mecca.
